The Roosevelt's had a menagerie of animals a various times:

  • one black bear cub - named "Jonathan Edwards"
  • the badger - Josiah
  • dogs with names like Jack and Skip
  • the blue macaw - Eli
  • the ponies Algonquin and General Grant
  • a kitten - Tom Quartz
  • pet garden snake - Emily Spinach (it was Alice's pet - named so because she didn't like spinach and she didn't like Aunt Emily)
  • various and assorted hamsters and guinea pigs -with names like "Bishop Doane."

The children named animals after real people they admired, not paying too much attention to the sex of the animal. At one point, Theodore Roosevelt was in a meeting when they were interrupted by one of his children bursting in crying, "Father, come quickly! Bishop Doane has just had babies!"

When TR's children tried to name a piglet after their nanny, Mame Ledwith, she became insulted. They didn't understand why.

TR had horses with names like Little Texas, Rain-in-the-Face, and Bliestein. Mrs. Roosevelt's favorite riding horse was Yagenka.
