The Roosevelt's had a menagerie of animals a various times:
The children named animals after real people they admired, not paying too much attention to the sex of the animal. At one point, Theodore Roosevelt was in a meeting when they were interrupted by one of his children bursting in crying, "Father, come quickly! Bishop Doane has just had babies!" When TR's children tried to name a piglet after their nanny, Mame Ledwith, she became insulted. They didn't understand why. TR had horses with names like Little Texas, Rain-in-the-Face, and Bliestein. Mrs. Roosevelt's favorite riding horse was Yagenka. |
