Historic Theodore Roosevelt Copper Beech Table Sells for $225,000 to Benefit the Theodore Roosevelt Association
July 2, 2026
The Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) is proud to announce that the handcrafted table created from the historic copper beech tree planted by President Theodore Roosevelt outside his study at Sagamore Hill National Historic Site sold for $225,000 during Rock Island Auction Company's prestigious American Sale on June 27, 2026.
The extraordinary result will directly support the Theodore Roosevelt Association's mission to perpetuate the legacy, memory, and ideals of Theodore Roosevelt through programs in historical scholarship, conservation, youth leadership, as well as initiatives supporting the military and law enforcement communities.
Originally planted by Theodore Roosevelt in the 1890s, the iconic copper beech stood watch over Sagamore Hill for more than a century, becoming one of the home's most recognizable landmarks. By the late 2010s, however, the beloved tree was in severe decline, losing leaves and bark and posing a safety risk to both the historic home and its visitors. Despite extensive efforts to preserve it, the tree could not be saved and was carefully removed in 2019. Rather than allowing this piece of history to be lost, the wood was masterfully transformed into a one-of-a-kind work of craftsmanship by sportsman-conservationist Ward M. “Trig” French that now carries Theodore Roosevelt's legacy into the future.
The table was offered during Rock Island Auction Company's American Sale, a celebration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence that realized more than $15.2 million and featured numerous world-record-setting historic artifacts.
The Theodore Roosevelt Association extends its deepest gratitude to Rock Island Auction Company for generously donating its services to conduct the sale. Their remarkable commitment made it possible for every dollar raised from the auction to advance the TRA's educational and mission-driven programs.
"We are grateful to Rock Island Auction Company for its generosity and partnership," said Gregory Wynn, President and Chairman of the Theodore Roosevelt Association. "Their willingness to donate their services reflects not only corporate leadership but also a commitment to preserving America's history. We are also thankful to Simon Roosevelt and Ward French for their dedication and support in helping bring this remarkable project to fruition. We are thrilled with the outstanding result, and these funds will help ensure Theodore Roosevelt's legacy and ideals continue to inspire generations to come."
The TRA also extends its sincere appreciation to the anonymous winning bidder for recognizing the historical significance of this remarkable piece. More than a beautifully crafted table, it is a tangible connection to Theodore Roosevelt's home, his conservation legacy, and the enduring principles of leadership, citizenship, and service that continue to define the Theodore Roosevelt Association.
Founded in 1919 and chartered by Congress in 1920, the Theodore Roosevelt Association is the official organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the life, legacy, and ideals of America's 26th President. The proceeds from this historic sale will strengthen the TRA's work for years to come, ensuring that Theodore Roosevelt's example continues to educate, inspire, and challenge future generations to "dare mighty things.”
